Monochromic's "Silent" Cicada: Provence's icon reinvented.

The ceramic cicada... We all have the image of this somewhat kitsch souvenir, with gaudy colors, that we brought back from holidays in Provence in the 80s.
It took a lot of audacity to dare to touch this monument of folklore. This is the successful gamble of Karine Lanny, founder of Monochromic. With her Silent Cicada, she transformed a "grandma's trinket" into an object of desire with a contemporary and refined design.

    1. Why "Muette"?

    A humorous and stylish wink.

Its name is a play on words. Unlike the real insect that sings all summer long (sometimes very loudly!), this ceramic cicada promises to decorate your home in absolute silence.
But "Mute" also refers to its design. Gone are the realistic wing details and yellow and black paints. Here, the form is stylized, faceted like a diamond. It's an evocation of the cicada, a shadow. By becoming monochrome (of a single color), it loses its garrulous side and gains timeless elegance.

Clean, modern lines, a departure from traditional folk style.

    2. A solar symbol (Lucky Charm)

Keep the meaning, change the form.

    Where to place your Cicada?
In Provence, tradition dictates that a cicada be hung at the entrance of the house (often near the door) to bring good luck and protect the home.

    • On its own: Simply place it on a stack of beautiful books or on an entryway console. It's a sculptural object that speaks for itself.
    • In a collection: As with swallows, have fun creating a colony on a wall. Mix sizes (the small and the large) and dare to go tone-on-tone (a white cicada on a white wall) for a very subtle and chic embossed effect.
« I wanted to keep the soul of the South, its warmth, its kindness, but by bringing it into the codes of current design. »

    3. Provençal Craftsmanship

    • Red Clay: The Cicada is molded from natural red clay, the traditional material of southern potters.
    • Color Palette: It comes in the brand's signature shades: the famous Ultramarine Blue, Olive Green (very trendy), Terracotta, or Brass (Gold) for a precious touch.
    • Attachment: Like the swallow, it has a hole in the back for easy hanging on a nail, flush against the wall.

What is the symbolism of the cicada?
In Provençal folklore, the cicada is a symbol of warmth, lightheartedness, and resurrection (because it remains underground for several years before singing). It is the ultimate solar good luck charm.
Is the Gold (Brass) finish fragile?
The Gold finish is a genuine, precious enamel. It is beautiful but can be a little more susceptible to scratches than matte finishes. Clean it only with a soft, dry cloth to preserve its metallic sheen.
